NATURAL ELEMENTS – Shakti (1977)
When I was in junior high school, my music references only came from Indonesian folk music or some international artists like John Denver, the Bellamy Brothers, and Deep Purple, and I liked Richie Blackmore. Some of my friends were listening to John McLaughlin’s groups Mahavishnu Orchestra and Shakti. When I was introduced to Shakti’s Natural Elements my mind was blown From that moment my perception of music changed forever and that kind of music became my reference — Quando stavo alle scuole medie, il mio unico punto di riferimento musicale era la musica folk indonesiana, o al massimo artisti stranieri molto conosciuti come John Denver, Bellamy Brother, Deep Purple… mi piaceva Richie Blackmore. Alcuni miei amici invece ascoltavano la Mahavishnu Orchestra e Shakti: appena ho sentito Natural Elements sono andato fuori di testa e da quel momento la mia percezione della musica è cambiata per sempre. Quel tipo di musica è diventato il mio punto di riferimento
AMERICAN GARAGE – Pat Metheny (1979)
Still in high school, this was the first Pat Metheny album I discovered. I was already starting to play electric guitar seriously and the way Pat played the hollow body guitar impressed me a lot. That early quartet of Pat Metheny Group with Lyle Mays, Mark Egan and Danny Gottlieb is maybe my favorite — Sempre a scuola ho scoperto Pat Metheny, questo è stato il primo album che ho ascoltato. Stavo già iniziando a suonare la chitarra e il modo in cui Pat suonava la caratteristica chitarra senza la cassa mi colpì moltissimo. Quella prima formazione del Pat Metheny Group con Lyle Mays, Mark Egan e Danny Gottlieb è probabilmente la mia preferita in assoluto
SARGASSO SEA – John Abercrombie & Ralph Towner (1976)
In those high school days I started to listen to more and more ECM artists. When I heard this album, I just said “Wow!” They remain my favorite guitar duo; their playing is unique and reveals the blending of harmonic characteristics of two guitar maestros. Even today, Ralph Towner is my favorite acoustic guitar player, someone I listen to all the time — In quegli anni iniziai ad ascoltare anche i prodotti ECM, e questo album mi colpì particolarmente. Tuttora, lo considero il miglior esempio di duo chitarristico di sempre, molto originale e capace di rivelare l’unione delle armonie caratteristiche di due veri maestri. Ralph Towner è il mio chitarrista acustico preferito, ascolto i suoi dischi in continuazione
MANDANCE – Ronald Shanon Jackson & The Decoding Society (1982)
I heard this band playing in Surabaya in early 80’s, the second largest city in my country where I lived briefly before moving to Jakarta, Until I heard them, I wasn’t able to understand that kind of music. But they blew me away and thanks to this band and their amazing record Mandance, I started listening to free jazz and experimental music, and I started exploring the music of Ornette Coleman, Sonny Sharock, Vernon Reid, and then I became, of course, a fan of Living Colour — Quando ascoltai questa band a Surabaya, la seconda città in ordine di grandezza nel mio paese, non riuscì a comprendere appieno questo tipo di musica. Ma mi colpì ugualmente, e successivamente grazie a Mandance iniziai ad ascoltare il free jazz e la musica sperimentale, approdando a Ornette Coleman, Sonny Sharock, Vernon Reid… e diventando un fan dei Living Colour
MY SONG – Keith Jarrett (1978)
Another ECM masterpiece, and once I heard this album, it became without doubt my favorite album of all time, simply magic. Keith Jarrett is accompanied by some of the greatest musicians of all times who eventually one day I would like to record with: Jon Christensen, Jan Garbarek and Palle Danielsson — Un altro capolavoro ECM, dopo averlo ascoltato diventò immediatamente il mio album preferito di sempre, semplicemente magico. Keith Jarrett è accompagnato da alcuni grandissimi musicisti con cui un giorno mi piacerebbe collaborare: Jon Christensen, Jan Garbarek e Palle Danielsson
PATHS, PRINTS – Jan Garbarek (1982)
If I am allowed to be born again, I would like to play the guitar the way Jan Garbarek plays saxophone on this album. He is one of the most unique saxophonists in the history of music, and he has its own signature sound. This is the album that introduced me to one of my favorite guitarists, Bill Frisell. And I cannot add anything else on top of the names of Eberhard Weber and Jon Christensen, except: geniuses! — Se potessi rinascere, mi piacerebbe suonare la chitarra allo stesso modo in cui Jan Garbarek suona il sax su questo disco. E’ uno dei sassofonisti più originali nella storia della musica, ha il suo sound caratteristico. Inoltre questo album mi ha fatto conoscere uno dei miei chitarristi preferiti, Bill Frisell. In più, ci sono anche dei veri geni come Eberhard Weber e Jon Christensen
YOU HAD IT COMING – Jeff Beck (2001)
The first time I saw Jeff, one of my favorite guitar players, was in 2002 in San Francisco; he was promoting this amazing album. It was magic, an unrepeatable experience — Ho visto dal vivo Jeff la prima volta a San Francisco nel 2002, proprio durante al promozione di questo fantastico album. E’ stata un’esperienza magica e irripetibile
ROAD GAMES – Allan Holdsworth (1983)
Allan is one and only, and not from this planet, the ultimate genius of guitar, of harmony and compositions, one of a kind. While other people played jazz-rock or fusion, Allan played something that is beyond and above any genre, a music that transcends any genre. If there is a genre, it’s the Allan Holdsworth genre. Thank God, I’ve met Allan. In January 2013, my friend Leonardo Pavkovic of MoonJune Records, who is Allan’s manager, took me to his then home in San Juan Capistrano, California, and Allan signed his signature headless Carvin guitar for my Guitar Museum in Bali. I dedicated a tune called Capistrano to the Grand Maestro on my recent album Surya Namaskar — Allan viene da un altro pianeta, è un genio insuperabile per tecnica, armonia e capacità compositive. Mentre gli altri suonavano il jazz rock o la fusion, Allan suonava qualcosa che andava oltre a questi generi, che trascendeva ogni genere musicale: se esiste un genere per la musica di Holdsworth, quello è solo il suo. Grazie a Dio ho potuto incontrarlo di persona, Leonardo Pavkovic che è mio amico e che gli fa da manager mi ha portato a casa sua, a San Juan Capistrano in California nel gennaio del 2013. Ha autografato la sua Carvin per il mio museo delle chitarre a Bali, e gli ho dedicato un brano sul mio ultimo album Surya Namaskar, intitolato appunto Capistrano
HEAVY WEATHER – Weather Report (1977)
WR is one of my favorite bands and compositionally this is their best album ever. Joe Zawinul is a genius and this album is a masterpiece. Wayne Shorter is the ultimate jazz legend. This is the album that put another genius in major spotlight, Jaco Pastorius. After discovering this great band, I became a huge fan and in 2002 I contacted Peter Erskine to do an album together. We started our collaboration with my album Samsara (2003), and Peter appeared also on my albums Home (2005),Dawai In Paradise (2011) and Joged Kahyangan (2013) — I Weather Report sono uno dei miei gruppi preferiti e questo a livello compositivo è il loro album migliore di sempre. Joe Zawinul è un genio, e i suoi album sono dei capolavori. Wayne Shorter è una leggenda del jazz. Inoltre in questo disco emerge il talento di Jaco Pastorius. Dopo aver ascoltato questo disco sono diventato un grande fan del gruppo e nel 2002 ho contattato Peter Erskine, iniziando una collaborazione che ci ha portato a suonare insieme su diversi miei album: Samsara (2003), Home (2005), Dawai In Paradise (2011) e Joged Kahyangan (2013)
ON AN ISLAND – David Gilmour (2006)
I am from Bali, a magic island in my country. This is about 10 desert island albums and if David Gilmour is one of my favorite guitarists, then, this is one of my 10 desert island albums. I love how he plays lyrically and adore his signature sustained Stratocaster sound. His compositions, vocals, and guitar playing are so peaceful, and everything makes me feel so good — Sono nato a Bali, un’isola magica. Dato che questa lista riguarda i dischi dell’isola deserta, e David Gilmour è uno dei miei chitarristi preferiti, non posono non includere anche questo album. Adoro il modo lirico che ha di suonare, e il suo caratteristico suono Stratocaster pieno di sustain. I brani sono molto tranquilli, la sua voce e il suo modo di suonare mi fanno sentire bene
